Preventing & Treating Substance Abuse
Today, all Americans are living healthier lives due to
discoveries and advances in preventive medicine.
Unfortunately, substance abuse still jeopardizes the
health of individuals across all racial and ethnic
populations. For example, according to the 2000 National
Household Survey on Drug Abuse, the rates of current
illicit drug use for major racial / ethnic groups were
6.4 percent for Whites, 6.4 percent for African
Americans and 5.3 percent for Hispanics. The usage rate
was highest among the American Indian / Alaska Native
population (12.6 percent) and among persons reporting
multiple race (14.8 percent). Asians had the lowest rate
(2.7 percent).
Every family and community—regardless of ethnic
orientation—can take steps to prevent substance abuse
before it starts, or treat addiction once it occurs. The
key is to make sure that comprehensive and
culturally-relevant information and resources are
accessible.
